3 Herbal Bed Bug Deterrents For Your Bedroom

by Luke Fields

With the amount of bed bug home infestations on the rise, you may wonder if there are any natural solutions for keeping these unwanted pests out of your bedroom. If so, use one or all of the following herbal deterrents that smell pleasant to you and your family, but awful to bed bugs. The ingredients can be found in herbal shops and pharmacies.

Essential Oil Laundry Additive For Your Bed Linens

This homemade laundry additive is made from the essential oils of lavender, eucalyptus, and rosemary. When added to the washing machine along with your bed linens, the oils infuse into the fabrics to provide you with a long-lasting bed bug repellent.

What You Will Need

Gather the following ingredients and supplies to make the laundry additive.

  • Glass jar with lid
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 20 drops of lavender oil
  • 10 drops of eucalyptus oil
  • 10 drops of rosemary oil

Directions

After you have what you need, follow the directions below.

  1. Add the ingredients to the jar.
  2. Screw on the lid and shake vigorously for one minute.
  3. Start filling your washing machine with hot water.
  4. After adding your usual laundry detergent, add a tablespoon of the additive. If you are washing an extra large load or a comforter, add two tablespoons.
  5. Add your bed linens.
  6. Wash and dry as usual.
  7. If you desire, use the minty spray described in the next before making your bed with the clean linens.

Minty Spray For Your Mattress, Bed Frame, Baseboards, And Carpet

This spray for your mattress, bed frame, baseboards, and carpet uses peppermint and eucalyptus oils to keep the bed bugs away. Bed bugs cannot stand the smell of mint so it creates an effective defense against an invasion.

What You Will Need

Before you make your spray, gather the items listed below.

  • Plastic spray bottle
  • 2 cups of water
  • 15 drops of peppermint oil
  • 10 drops of eucalyptus oil

Directions

After you have your supplies, follow the directions below.

  1. Add all of the ingredients to the spray bottle.
  2. Replace the sprayer and shake vigorously to mix the oils with the water.
  3. Apply a light mist of the spray to your bed, mattress, and carpets. Do not forget to spray underneath the bed as well.
  4. Allow the spray to dry for 30 minutes before making the bed.

Herbal Sachets For Your Dresser Drawers

Although they are called bed bugs, these pesky insects make their home anywhere in your bedroom, including your dresser drawers. These herbal sachets contain dried lavender, bay leaves, rosemary, and thyme, all of which smell repugnant to bed bugs. You can also place a couple of the sachets between your mattress and bed springs.

What You Will Need

You will need the following supplies for each sachet.

  • 4"x4" square of cotton or muslin fabric
  • 2-inch long piece of ribbon, twine, or yarn
  • 1/2 teaspoon of lavender
  • 1/2 teaspoon of rosemary
  • 1/2 teaspoon of thyme
  • 2 bay leaves, crushed

Directions

After you have your supplies, follow the directions below to create one sachet. Repeat them for each one you desire to make.

  1. Place the dried herbs in the center of the cloth square.
  2. Pull the corners towards the center and twist them together.
  3. Wrap and tie the ribbon or yarn in the center of the twist.
  4. Refresh the dried herbs once a month to keep the sachets potent.

The above herbal deterrents will help prevent bed bugs from coming into your bedroom. However, if you find signs of an infestation, you may want to contact a professional pest control service for more about this topic and other options for getting rid of your unwelcome guests.

About Me

Do You Need Private Mortgage Insurance?

Welcome to my website. My name is Larry Silva, and I want to talk a bit about private mortgage insurance. You may have heard the term PMI mentioned when you were in the process of purchasing real estate. When I first heard my lender talking about PMI, I was very confused. It was my realtor who sat me down and explained what private mortgage insurance was and when someone is required to purchase it. He told me that PMI is not lifelong insurance; it can be cancelled when the mortgage principal balance reaches a certain point. Once it was explained to me, private mortgage insurance was no longer a mystery or a confusing concept. I would like to pass on what I learned and hope that you find it to be of value.
